Extreme telecommunications for the fire service
L3Harris is a Fortune 500 technology company providing communication systems and products for government, defence and commercial sectors.
Porticos Asia has been supporting L3Harris with design for manufacturing and production services for over 15 years. During this time we have provided support for individual parts and complete products. Previous projects include a wide range of seals and mechanical sub-assemblies for telecommunication products and the Unity LMR Radio, all for the commercial sector.
Because of our experience in working with L3Harris and our reputation for reliability and quality Porticos Asia was engaged with our US partner, Porticos Inc. for the development and production for a remote speaker mic and cable for fire services designed to meet the NFPA 1802 standard. This standard comprises a series of extremely challenging tests including: subjecting the device to a naked flame up to 1,150ºC and six cycles of heating the device to 177ºC and then immersing it in water to 1.5m depth. In both cases the device must remain fully operational.
Porticos Inc. was tasked with providing a complete design solution encompassing mechanical, electrical and firmware design. During this intensive development process we worked closely with our US colleagues to ensure cost-effectiveness and manufacturability. And in under two months, from the finalization of the design, we were able to ship prototype samples built with parts using mass production processes.
These samples were subject to and passed extremely rigorous testing designed to simulate the demanding environment fire service personnel often work in.
Production has now commenced with a the remote speaker mic being manufactured by a separate facility whilst Porticos Asia supports production of the range of cables used to connect the remote speaker mics to radios such as the XL Extreme, also engineered by Porticos Inc.
