In attempting to ameliorate the negative impact of product manufacturing and consumption many companies choose to incorporate the use of recycled material. It is understandable that such a solution is often preferred as it allows companies to continue with their current product development cycles and also maintain and increase sales. However, as numerous studies have shown, a far more impactful solution to sustainability in product design is simply to produce and consume less, thereby using less resources and generating less negative environmental impacts. This can be achieved in a number of ways: by developing products that customers form strong attachments with and therefore keep and use for longer, by designing for repair and re-use, by designing ecosystems that facilitate repair and re-use or simply by designing better quality products that last longer.
